Geographical Information System (GIS) is the way to understand the natural world around us in the present and future. GIS is the new form of cartography, taking it to a whole new level. With GIS you can predict floods, identify natural areas in danger, find the best habitat for endangered species, plan cities into the future and communicate all of this information in a way that everyone can understand.
At the Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority (GRCA), GIS is positioned under Corporate Services. This ensures all departments’ equal access to the data, analysis, applications and mapping services that are provided. Some of the specific uses of GIS at the GRCA include our Ecological Land Classification layer, Regulation Limit, floodplain mapping, site locations of our many monitoring and stewardship programs, and support to our planning and engineering staff for site plan review. GIS also supports many special projects such as Drinking Water Source Protection and Showcasing Water Innovation (including case studies on erosion (FR), floor plain mapping (FR) and flood damage reduction (FR)).
Like any technology, GIS is constantly growing. By partnering with our member municipalities and other conservation authorities we strive to provide the best possible GIS services by using the best possible software, hardware and methodologies.
