Applications reopen for free tree saplings through Emerald Ash Borer Replacement Tree Program

Cobourg, ON – January 13, 2020 – Northumberland County’s Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) Replacement Tree Program has returned for its second year, following a successful 2019 program that resulted in the planting of 12,000 trees. Northumberland County residents are invited to apply to obtain tree saplings at no charge this spring, as part of the five-year program subsidized by the County.

Northumberland residents can apply to receive between 10 to 150 trees to plant on private property. All order requests for 2020 will be taken on a first come, first served basis and will be accepted until February 14, while supplies last. Successful applicants will be notified and will be able to pick up their saplings in the spring at the Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority in Port Hope.

“Each year, we aim to distribute 12,000 trees for a total of 60,000 trees subsidized throughout the duration of the five-year program,” states County Natural and Cultural Heritage Manager Todd Farrell. “Our first year of the program was a great success and we look forward to continuing to foster a biodiverse local ecosystem with another 12,000 subsidized native saplings being distributed throughout Northumberland this year.”

This program is designed to replace trees that are being removed as part of the County’s 10-year plan to remove and replace hazardous trees from County right-of-ways. This plan was developed to prevent injury or damage from trees falling due to infection from EAB, an invasive boring insect which attacks and kill ash trees. For every one ash tree removed along County roads as part of the 10-year plan, the County will subsidize approximately ten native trees for residents to plant on private property.

“This program is a great opportunity to enhance your property while contributing to a thriving ecological community,” states Pam Lancaster, Stewardship Technician with the Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority. “We look forward to partnering with Northumberland County on the delivery of the EAB Replacement Tree Program again this year.”
