CAMPBELLCROFT, ON – Saturday August 28th 2010 marked the commemorative ceremony of a 200 acre parcel of property donated to the Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority (GRCA). Chair Ray Benns; Mark Peacock, Director of Watershed Services; as well as GRCA Full Authority Board Members Charlie Trim and Gord Robinson were joined by the Vanhaverbeke family of Newcastle to recognize this grateful donation.
Through the vision and generosity of Edmond and Sylvia Vanhaverbeke the gift of a special part of the Oak Ridges Moraine came into public ownership. The ‘Laura Vanhaverbeke Tract’ was celebrated on the birthday of Laura with a small ceremony held on the property north east of the Ganaraska Forest Centre off of Cold Springs Camp Road.
The Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority is dedicated to using this property for the enjoyment and learning of the community. Additionally, the conservation authority will prepare a management plan for the area to ensure its unique ecology is conserved for generations to come.
The Ganaraska Forest is an 11,000+ acres forest located within an hour’s drive of Toronto, straddling the Counties of Northumberland, Peterborough, Victoria and the Region of Durham. With hundreds of kilometres of trails, the multi-use forest provides year-round opportunities for a variety of activities.
The Oak Ridges Moraine runs through the Ganaraska Forest, stretching 160 kilometres from the Trent River to the Niagara Escarpment. This unique formation has many natural wonders including forests, wetlands and open fields provide shelter for diverse plant and animal species. By investing your time on the ORM you can observe wildlife, discover seasonal wild flowers, and learn a great deal about our natural surroundings.
