The Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority advises residents that flows are returning to normal levels in all watercourses after heavy rainfall resulted in flooding yesterday. The weather system has moved out of the province, temperatures have fallen and flurries are expected for today.
Many of the rivers and streams within the GRCA flowed over their banks yesterday resulting in flooding in low-lying areas and where drainage was blocked by debris. Cobourg received the most rain at 64mm and peak flows in Cobourg Creek exceeded 80 cubic meters per second. Mild temperatures and rain caused melting of the snowpack while frozen ground conditions reduced infiltration causing increased runoff.
The GRCA is advising watershed residents that the ground is now saturated and stream banks are still slippery and potentially dangerous. Please use extreme caution staying well back of stream banks and flowing water. Please alert any children in your care of these dangers.
For further information, please contact the following GRCA staff at 905-885-8173 between 8:30am and 4:30pm or the Flood Duty Officer at 905-373-2038 or 289-251-2094 (after normal business hours). If you notice a potential flooding hazard please contact the Flood Duty Officer.
