While being thankful for the fall harvest, it is important to remember our impacts on the environment. Protecting our water is important for your family, neighbours and community. Water that we drink has been naturally recycled through evaporation, precipitation and groundwater infiltration. We actually never receive new water. While some residents receive their water from private wells, others drink their water after it has been treated by municipal water treatment systems. With both sources it is important that drinking water be kept clean and protected from contamination. Taking time this thanksgiving to do a few simple actions can help ensure that our water is protected.
Household Hazardous Waste: Products such as bleach, cleaning products, and medicine do not belong in drains, streams or the garbage. Take your hazardous waste to your local household hazardous waste collection events this fall.
Taps and Toilets: Conserve water everyday by limiting your daily activities. When brushing your teeth turn the tap off. When taking a shower limit it to ten minutes or install water saving devices.
Green Products: Using environmentally friendly cleaning products will not damage the environment. They are readily available at most grocery stores and work just as well as non-green cleaners.
