The Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority (GRCA) was thrilled to receive approval on their TD Canada Trust Friends of the Environment Foundation application last week; informing them of a $15,000 grant towards the Ganaraska Forest Centre (GFC) – Building for Change campaign. The foundation is a unique partnership that brings TD Canada Trust, its customers and its employees together to help protect Canada’s wildlife and environment.
The Northumberland Chapter Advisory Board viewed many applications for various projects throughout the county and the GRCA is thankful for their selection of such an important project. The GFC, an outdoor education facility, has been part of the GRCA for over 30 years and is in dire need of redevelopment. Construction began in May of 2008 on this 19,000 square foot multi-use facility that will house the Oak Ridges Moraine Information Centre, and the GRCA anticipates its grand opening in September of 2009.
Fundraising is ongoing for the Ganaraska Forest Centre, and those who visit the facility or make use of the Ganaraska Forest are welcome to support the campaign through different initiatives. “Communities within and beyond our watershed have shown great support towards the Building for Change campaign. We’re looking forward to a very exciting and successful year,” says Amy Griffiths, Marketing and Communications Officer for the GRCA. Until October 2009, GRCA staff and Building for Change fundraising committee members are selling raffle tickets for your chance to win a Honda ATV from Honda Canada, a TREK mountain bike from Wild Rock Outfitters in Peterborough, or a cross-country ski package from Somerville Sports in Cobourg. Tickets are $5 each or 3 for $10. In May of 2009 there will be a car rally throughout Northumberland County, and beginning in March, there will be pavers available for purchase in support of the Building for Change and that will be part of the landscape at the new centre.
